Somatic Experiencing

Somatic Experiencing® (SE) developed by Dr. Peter Levine, is based on the science that human beings have an innate ability to overcome the effects of trauma and stress. However, when this ability is overridden by overwhelming events and states of helplessness, it can leave us with symptoms keeping us from living a full and satisfying life. SE® uses your own natural ability to connect with the underlying health of your nervous system, allowing you to experience a resolve or dramatic reduction of your traumatic symptoms. SE® restores self-regulation and returns a sense of aliveness, relaxation and wholeness to traumatized individuals who have had these precious gifts taken away. This work has been applied to resolve trauma symptoms from military combat, assault survivors, survivors of childhood abuse, auto accident trauma and dental and medical surgical trauma. For more information, visit the Somatic Experiencing® Trauma Institute at www.traumahealing.com. For a more comprehensive explanation of the theory and practice of SE®, I’d invite you to read ‘How Does SE Work?’ by Neil Winblad. I specialize in eating disorders and disordered eating (anorexia, bulimia, binge eating, emotional eating and weight management). My practice also focuses on trauma renegotiation utilizing Somatic Experiencing® approaches.

Above is a presentation by Dr. Peter Levine to demonstrate the effects of trauma on the nervous system, and his philosophy of treating trauma; which involves slowly releasing (or titrating) this compressed fight-or-flight energy a bit at time to give the individual the ability to reintegrate it back into their nervous system.
